What is the terrain actually like?

Don't let the "net downhill" label fool you into thinking this is a flat track race. While you will drop 1,493 feet in total elevation, the course is characterized by rolling hills along the Santa Catalina foothills. You’ll be fighting small undulations while gravity tries to pull you down. It is USATF certified and a legitimate Boston Qualifier, but prepare for eccentric muscle loading—your downhill running mechanics need to be dialed in to avoid late-race cramping.

What should I expect regarding the weather?

December in the Sonoran Desert is generally a runner's dream, but it is unpredictable. Expect crisp, cool morning temperatures—likely in the 40s°F (4-9°C) at the 7:15 AM start. The sun will come up and heat things up quickly once you hit the Oro Valley stretches. Bring light, breathable gear, but don't be surprised if you feel a chill during the first few miles near Biosphere 2.

How much am I going to pay to run?

The pricing follows a standard tiered structure, so if you are planning to run, do not wait. Early bird rates (Dec 19 – Mar 31) are the most sensible, with the Marathon starting at $129 base. Prices climb significantly as you approach race day, eventually hitting $179 base in November. For the Half Marathon, you're looking at a range from $109 to $159 base. Given the course quality and the ability to chase a BQ, the early registration is a solid value.

What are my distance and start time options?

You have several ways to attack this course:

• Marathon & Marathon Relay: 7:20 AM (The full experience).
• 50K Ultra: 7:20 AM (For those wanting extra miles on The Loop).
• Half Marathon: 7:05 AM (A great way to test the downhill legs).
• Wheelchair Half Marathon: 7:00 AM.

The Half Marathon is a fantastic option if you want the scenic descent without the full 26.2-mile toll on your joints.

How do I handle the logistics of getting there?

You’ll likely fly into Tucson International (TUS) or Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX). If you fly into Phoenix, expect a 1.5 to 2-hour drive to the Tucson area. For the Half Marathon, be warned: there is no drop-off at the Golder Ranch start; you must coordinate transport via the bus from Oro Valley Marketplace. For the Marathon, the start is out at Biosphere 2, which is a bit of a trek from central Tucson, so plan your accommodation accordingly.
