What is the course actually like?
Don't expect a flat, boring cruise. With 630 feet of elevation gain, you’re going to feel the undulations. It’s USATF-certified and highly scenic, weaving through the heart of the UC Berkeley campus and Sather Gate. It’s a "big city" feel without the massive skyscraper claustrophobia, offering a mix of historic streets and campus greenery. It’s rhythmic—you’ll find a groove, but you’ll have to work for it.
What should I expect regarding weather and gear?
Mid-November in the Bay Area is a gamble, but generally, you're looking at crisp, cool mornings. Expect temperatures in the 40s or low 50s (°F) at the 7:30 AM start. A light singlet or a thin long-sleeve that you can shed is the smart play. The biggest wildcard is the fog; if it rolls in, it’ll be damp and chilly, so don't skip the layers until you're well into the warm-up.
Will I be cut off if I'm a slower runner?
Yes, there is a strict 4-hour cutoff (roughly an 18:20 min/mile pace). If you aren't across the line by 12:00 PM, you won't be recorded as an official finisher. It’s a generous window for most, but if you're walking the course, keep a close eye on the clock.
How is the support on the course?
They’ve got the basics covered well. You'll hit 7 aid stations providing water, electrolytes, and gels. They also provide medical aid and toilets at these stops. It’s organized enough that you won't be hunting for fuel, but it’s not so frequent that you can ignore your nutrition strategy.
What do I get for crossing the finish line?
You get the standard kit: a technical long-sleeved shirt and a finisher’s medal. The real win is the post-race setup—there’s a festival with music and, if you're 21+, access to a beer garden. They also handle the logistics of finisher photos and electronic certificates, so you don't have to worry about losing your proof of completion.
Is there any prize money or awards?
If you are an elite chasing the podium, there is money on the table ($150 down to $75 in Sports Basement gift cards for the top three men, women, and nonbinary runners). For the rest of us, age group winners receive wooden medallions. Just note that they don't do an on-site ceremony; they mail the awards out after race weekend, so don't expect a trophy presentation at the finish line.
