Mushroom Cap Half Marathon and Fungi 5 Miler 2026

Should I prepare for any specific weather conditions?

November in Kennett Square can be temperamental. Expect crisp, cool autumn air—likely in the 40s or low 50s (°F). You’ll want layers for the start, but once you hit those "Shiitake kicker hills," you’ll be sweating. Bring a light windbreaker for the early morning, but don't overdress, or you'll be miserable halfway through the climbs.

What is the terrain actually like on the course?

Don't let the "picturesque" description fool you into complacency; this course has teeth. You’ll face undulating hills—specifically the "Shiitake kicker hills"—that will test your leg strength. The route winds through historic landmarks and old-growth oaks, offering a beautiful aesthetic, and you'll get a nice downhill reward as you approach the finish. It's a "character" course, meaning it's not a treadmill.

Which distance is the best pick for me?

The Half Marathon (21K) is the flagship event and offers the full experience of the rolling countryside and historic sites. If you aren't looking for a heavy training block or just want to enjoy the festival atmosphere, the Fungi 5 Miler (~8K) is a much more casual way to see the "Mushroom Capital" without the heavy elevation toll.

How much am I going to spend on registration?

The pricing is tiered, so if you wait until the last minute, you'll pay a premium. The Half Marathon runs from $147.50 to $163.54, while the 5 Miler ranges from $83.30 to $88.65. Given the quality of the tech shirts, medals, and the post-race festival (including free Victory beer for half marathoners), it’s a fair price for a well-organized local gem.

What happens once I cross the finish line?

The finish line is where the real reward begins. You get a tech shirt and a finisher medal, but the real draw is the post-race celebration at the festival. We’re talking hot dogs, chocolate milk, and fresh produce. If you ran the half, there is free Victory beer available until 12:30 PM—which, frankly, is the best way to celebrate a hilly race.

What do I need to know about race day timing and logistics?

If you are running the Half Marathon, the 3.5-hour cutoff is generous, but don't dawdle. Most importantly: be at the start line early. Check-in closes at 7:30 AM sharp with absolutely no exceptions. If you miss that window, you're out. Hydration is well-covered with multiple stations for the half marathoners and two for the 5-miler.
