What should I expect from the terrain?
The half marathon is USATF certified and won't punish you with relentless climbing, but don't let the "minimal hills" claim fool you entirely. You’ll face about 500 feet of elevation gain, and the trick is that most of it hits you early. If you burn your matches in the first few miles, the river and Baker Wetlands sections will feel much longer than they actually are. Once you settle into the rhythm, it becomes a much more manageable, scenic grind. Check the routes on Onthegomap ↗ or Garmin ↗ to visualize the flow.
How will the weather affect my gear choice?
Early November in Lawrence is unpredictable. You are likely looking at crisp, cool mornings—think 40°F to 55°F (4°C to 13°C). It’s prime running weather, but the humidity off the Baker Wetlands can occasionally make it feel damp. I’d recommend a light singlet and shorts, but definitely bring a throwable jacket for the start line at South Park. If you're a 5K runner, the 7:00 AM start means you'll be racing against the rising sun.
Is there enough support on the course?
For the half marathon, the logistics are well-handled. You'll find seven aid stations spaced out reasonably (roughly every 1.5 to 2 miles). They provide the essentials: water and sports drinks. If you are a gel-dependent runner, don't rely on the organizers to carry you; energy gels are only available at stations 4 through 7. For the 5K, it's much leaner, with just one station at the halfway mark.
Can I rely on pacers to hit a specific time?
Yes, and this is one of the event's strongest points. The SmartPacing team provides an incredibly granular range of targets, from the sub-1:30 crowd all the way down to 3:10. If you are chasing a specific PB, this is much more useful than the standard "even pace" groups you see at larger city marathons.
What is the prize situation?
If you are an elite or a high-level Masters runner, there is skin in the game. The top three overall men and women receive gift certificates to Ad Astra Running (AAR), and there is a dedicated prize pool for Masters categories. Every finisher gets a medal, but don't come here just for the hardware—come here for the time.
What is the actual cost to run?
The pricing is fair for a USATF-certified road race. You're looking at approximately $103 for the half marathon and $50 for the 5K. It’s not a "budget" race, but given the pacing support and the fact that proceeds help fund healthcare access for the underserved, the value is justified.
