This isn't a mountain race for dirt junkies; it’s a scenic, rhythmic cruise along the canal. If you want to experience the beauty of the C&O Towpath without fighting roots or technical descents, this is your race.

PUSO 2026 takes place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in Washington, United States. You can choose between the 5K or the 10K distances. It is a highly accessible event that trades rugged terrain for a smooth, gravel-based scenic route.

What can I expect from the terrain?

The course is an out-and-back on the C&O Canal Towpath. It is remarkably flat, which is rare for a "trail" designation. You are running on light, stable gravel rather than pavement. While you don't need aggressive trail lugs—your standard road shoes will handle this just fine—don't expect the same snappy turnover you'd get on asphalt. It’s forgiving, but that gravel will shave a few seconds off your PB.

Should I go for the 5K or the 10K?

The 10K starts at 7:45 AM, followed by the 5K at 8:00 AM. If you want a real workout, the 10K is the way to go; it offers more aid stations (three total) to keep you fueled. However, if you just want a scenic morning stroll or a very easy jog, the 5K is perfectly manageable. Both are equally flat and straightforward.

What is the weather like in DC this time of year?

June in Washington can be a gamble. Expect humidity and temperatures that climb quickly once the sun hits the canal. Since this is a morning start, you'll likely beat the worst of the heat, but I’d recommend lightweight gear and staying hydrated. It’s a "rain or shine" event, so have a backup plan for a humid, damp morning.

What do I get for my registration fee?

The pricing is tiered: the 5K ranges from $40.22 to $51.25, and the 10K ranges from $56.77 to $67.80 depending on when you sign up. For the price, you're getting a chip-timed race, a technical Dri-Fit shirt, and a finisher's medal. It’s a fair deal, especially considering the money supports the PUSO Foundation. Register via Raceroster .

How is the race day setup?

The event is organized around the Fletcher’s Boathouse area. For the 10K, aid stations are well-spaced at approximately 1.55, 3.1, and 4.65 miles. If you are running a slower pace, note that there is a "Back of the Pack" pacing note of 11:00 min/mile for series scoring, though it isn't a hard cutoff. Restrooms are available near the start/finish, and you should plan to arrive at least 90 minutes early to handle packet pickup on race day.

Will there be any prizes?

Yes, if you are at the front of the pack. They award the top three overall men and women for both the 5K and 10K distances immediately following the race.
