What is the terrain actually like?
This isn't a technical trail race, but it isn't a standard road marathon either. You are looking at a "best of both worlds" scenario that can be tricky if you aren't prepared. For the first 21 miles, you’ll be navigating packed dirt and gravel. It’s smooth enough for speed but requires more ankle stability than asphalt. The final five miles transition to paved rural roads. It is a massive net downhill of -1,459 feet, which is why it's ranked as one of the fastest courses in the country, but the "heartbreak hill" around mile 20 and the tight, drop-off-heavy curves in that section mean you can't just zone out.
Will I be melting in the August heat?
August in New England can be a gamble. While the river valley provides some micro-climate relief, the final five miles on the paved sections through Greenfield Meadows are largely unshaded. Expect humidity and rising temperatures as the morning progresses. Plan your hydration strategy for the dirt sections, and don't be surprised if the sun feels intense once you hit the pavement near the finish.
How do I handle the logistics of the start and finish?
The logistics are a bit of a shuttle dance. You'll finish in Greenfield, but you start up in Marlboro, Vermont. You need to be ready for an early morning—the first shuttle leaves Greenfield Community College at 5:00 a.m. to get you to the Potash Hill start. The good news is that the organizers, Natural High Running ↗, seem to have the start line well-equipped with indoor shelter, toilets, and water, which is essential for a 7:00 a.m. start.
Is there anything special to see on the route?
If you can handle the dirt, the scenery is the main draw. You'll pass through the historic Green River Covered Bridge in Guilford (built in the 1870s) and cross the 1810 Green River Crib Dam. It’s a beautiful, pastoral run that feels much more connected to nature than your standard city marathon.
Can I use this to chase a Boston Qualifier?
Yes, but with a caveat. The course is USATF-certified and Boston Qualifier-eligible. However, because the net drop is under 1,500 feet, the BAA does not adjust your time for the downhill advantage. You get the speed of the descent without the "penalty" of a corrected time, which is a huge win for runners hunting a BQ.
