What is the route actually like?

The marathon is a beautiful, point-to-point coastal grind. You’ll start in Wailea, move through Kihei, and eventually hit the Highway 30 stretch near Ma'alaea Bay, which offers uninterrupted ocean views all the way to the finish at Launiupoko Beach Park. It is fully paved asphalt, but don't let the "flat" description fool you—the ocean breeze can turn into a headwind, and the sun exposure on the coastal stretches is relentless. What should I expect regarding weather and gear?

Since you are starting at 5:00 AM, you will be running in the dark. A headlamp is non-negotiable; you can drop it at aid stations to be transported to the finish, but don't attempt this without one. Expect cool, damp air at the start, but by the time the sun comes up around 7:00 AM, the temperature will climb quickly. Bring lightweight, moisture-wicking gear and a serious hydration strategy—the oceanfront sun is unforgiving.

How much am I going to spend on entry?

The pricing is quite fair for a destination race of this caliber. The Marathon is $189.86, the Half Marathon is $173.77, the 6 Mile is $93.29, and the 5K is $87.92. Given that this is an RRCA State Championship and a Boston qualifier, you aren't overpaying for the prestige.
