Kettlefoot 2026 takes place on May 30, 2026, at the Doe Mountain Recreation Area (DMRA) near Troutdale, Virginia. Participants can expect a challenging mountain trail experience characterized by significant elevation changes, uneven footing, and remote terrain. Late May in the Mountain City area typically brings mild to warm spring temperatures, though mountain weather can be unpredictable with potential for sudden temperature shifts or humidity. Runners will navigate trails that are shared with ATVs and dirt bikes, requiring constant alertness throughout the course.

What distances and course details are available?

  • 13K: Approximately 8.5 miles with ~2,000 feet of elevation gain (4-hour cutoff). Strava
  • 25K: Approximately 15.5 miles with ~2,850 feet of elevation gain (7.5-hour cutoff). Strava
  • 50K: Approximately 31 miles with ~5,700 feet of elevation gain, consisting of 2 loops of the 25K course (10.5-hour cutoff).

Note: The official 2026 course will be posted by April 1, 2026. Current details are based on the 2025 course and may be subject to adjustments due to damage from Hurricane Helene.

What are the essential race rules?

  • No pacers are allowed during the event.
  • Runners must check in at every staffed aid station.
  • If a participant drops from the race, they must notify a race official immediately.
  • Participants running the 50K who choose to drop down to the 25K distance mid-race are ineligible for placement awards.
  • The Race Director may request a review of GPS data before issuing any placement awards.

How is the course marked and navigated?

The course is marked with survey tape approximately every 1/4 mile, and critical intersections feature signage. For GPS-based navigation on DMRA property, the use of the OnX Backcountry app is strongly recommended.

What awards are provided?

  • Finisher awards are presented to all participants who complete their chosen distance.
  • Placement awards are given to the 1st place man and woman in two categories:

• Open

• Masters (40+)

Which waivers must be completed?

  • A USATF waiver must be signed, which is available during packet pickup.
  • A DMRA waiver must be completed online prior to race day via SmartWaiver .

What should spectators know about venue access?

Vehicle access beyond the Welcome Center is restricted to mountain bikes and OHV users. Fees for day passes include:

  • Hiking/biking day pass: $5.00
  • OHV day pass: $25.00
