What is the terrain actually like?

You’ll start with 9 miles of pure scenery through Icicle Canyon, but you are transitioning between paved roads, paths, and dirt/gravel sections. The organizers mark the off-road bits with flour and tape, but you need to be prepared for a change in footing. It’s a beautiful, rhythmic mix, but the technicality of the trails means you can't just zone out on autopilot.
What should I expect regarding the weather and gear?
October in the Cascades is a wildcard. You can expect crisp, cool mornings—likely in the 40s or low 50s (°F)—with the potential for rapid changes if the mountain weather turns. I’d recommend a light, breathable layer you can shed easily. Since you’ll be hitting dirt and gravel, don't bring your thinnest racing flats; something with a bit more grip and stability for the non-paved sections will save your ankles.
How much am I going to pay to run?
The marathon is currently sold out, but for the Half Marathon, you have a clear pricing ladder. If you're decisive, the "Early Value" rate is roughly $100.66 (through Jan 31). If you wait until the day of the race, you're looking at nearly $167. For a USATF-sanctioned event with professional timing and high-quality support, the pricing is fair, though the marathon's scarcity makes it a "get in early" type of race.
How do I handle the logistics on race morning?
Listen closely: if you are running the marathon, you cannot drive to the start. You must take the shuttle from Leavenworth. This is a non-negotiable rule to keep the canyon roads clear, and if you miss the 6:15 AM last shuttle, you are effectively disqualified. For the Half Marathon, things are much simpler with a 9:00 AM start at Enchantment Park. Aid stations are well-placed every 2-3 miles, featuring Skratch and GU, so you won't be running on empty.
What do I get for crossing the finish line?
You’ll get an official finisher’s medal and a post-race spread of fruit, cookies, and muffins. They also provide professional race photos on the results page by the end of the day, which is a massive plus for those of us who want proof of our suffering in such a scenic setting.
