If you want a marathon that won't destroy your quads with vertical gain, this is it. The Strand waterfront offers a beautiful backdrop, but don't let the scenery fool you into thinking it's a walk in the park—the tropical humidity is the real opponent here.
Townsville Running Festival 2026 takes place on Sunday, 2 August 2026, in Townsville, Australia. The event offers a full range of distances including a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and 2.5K. It is a premier North Queensland event that balances serious racing with a festive, community atmosphere.
Which distances are available and when do they start?
You need to be an early riser if you're chasing a marathon time. The Townsville Airport Marathon kicks off at the crack of dawn (4:45am) to beat the heat. The Half Marathon follows at 6:10am, the 10K at 6:45am, and the shorter 5K and 2.5K distances roll out between 7:15am and 7:40am. If you want the "real" racing experience, the Half Marathon is the sweet spot—you get the best of the coastal views without the brutal sunrise start required for the full marathon.
What can I expect from the terrain?
The course is primarily road-based, utilizing Townsville's streets and the iconic Strand waterfront. It is a relatively flat affair, making it a solid choice for those hunting a PB, though you'll deal with some turns and urban sections. You can study the specific routes here: Townsville Running Festival ↗. The 5K and 2.5K courses are fully traffic-free, which is a massive plus for safety and flow, while the longer distances operate under controlled traffic.
Is it going to be brutally hot?
August in Townsville is technically "winter," but don't pack your heavy layers. Expect mild, pleasant mornings, likely in the mid-to-high teens (Celsius), but once the sun is up, the tropical humidity will start to bite. The early start times for the marathon and half are non-negotiable for a reason: once the sun hits the bitumen, the perceived temperature climbs rapidly. Stick to your electrolytes.
How well-supported is the course?
The logistics for hydration are solid. You'll find water stops roughly every 2.5km, with specialized drink and electrolyte stations every 5km. If you are aiming for a specific time, there are pacers on hand for almost every distance: Marathon (4:00 to 5:00), Half (1:40 to 2:15), 10K (40–70 min), and 5K (20–35 min). Bag drop is available near the assembly area, and portable toilets are positioned at the HQ and along the course. Just make sure you arrive at the precinct at least an hour before your gun time to avoid the last-minute scramble.
