What’s the route actually like?

The marathon is a one-lap beauty. You aren't stuck on a long, boring highway; instead, you weave through Munich’s most prestigious neighborhoods like Sendlinger Tor and Odeonsplatz. You’ll hit the English Garden—which is arguably the best mid-race scenery you can find in Europe—before the final stretch into the Olympic Park. It’s relatively flat, making it a prime target for personal bests, but the city streets can get crowded, so don't expect a wide-open track.

Which distance should I aim for?

If you want the full experience, the Marathon is the flagship, but the Half Marathon and 10 KM are currently sold out, which tells you everything you need to know about the demand. The Marathon starts early, while the 10 KM is a midday affair starting at 1:30 pm. If you are running with a crew, the Höffner Marathon Relay is a fantastic way to tackle the distance without the solo mental grind.

How do I handle the weather in October?

Munich in mid-October is a gamble. You’re looking at crisp, autumnal temperatures—likely between 8°C and 14°C (46°F–57°F). It’s perfect for racing, but if the Bavarian autumn decides to turn damp and chilly, you'll want lightweight layers that you can easily shed. Don't get caught without a light jacket for the warm-up.

What happens at the finish line?

You finish at Willi-Daume-Platz by the Olympic Lake, which is a great atmosphere. Every full marathon finisher gets a medal (8.5 cm diameter), and if you're a completionist, you can pay €15 to have it personalized. The real perk for marathoners is the exclusive signature bag.

How organized is the race day setup?

It’s professional. You’ve got Suunto handling the timing and pacemakers available for the 3:00 to 5:00 hour windows, which is vital if you're chasing a specific time. For fueling, REWE is the partner, so expect standard, reliable aid stations with bananas, bars, and snacks. If you need recovery, there’s a BLACKROLL station at the finish to help with that post-race stiffness.

Is it worth the trip to Munich?

Absolutely. Between the massive Saturday Pasta Party behind Biergarten Coubertin and the chance to run through the heart of Bavaria, it’s more of a weekend festival than a race. If you can secure a spot, do it.
