This isn't a scenic "postcard" race where you glide through manicured forests. It’s a loop-heavy, repetitive grind that tests your mental toughness as much as your legs. If you want a social, low-fuss atmosphere with a high reward-to-cost ratio, this is your July 4th plan.
Finger Lakes 50s 2026 takes place on Saturday, July 4, 2026, in the Finger Lakes National Forest near Hector, United States. The event offers 50 Mile, 50K, and 25K distances. It is a quintessential American trail ultra: loop-based, community-driven, and unapologetically rugged.
What is the terrain actually like?
The course is a 16.5-mile loop that is 85% singletrack. It’s not a technical nightmare, but it isn't a flat path either; expect about 1,300 feet of climbing per lap. You’ll deal with dirt, some pavement, and—fair warning—grassy pastures where cows graze. You will encounter cow pies. Also, the boardwalk sections are notoriously slick, even when the weather is dry, so don't get cocky with your footing. Follow the blue arrows and pink flagging; do not trust the local forest blazes or you will get lost.

How much am I going to sweat?
Since this is July 4th in Upstate New York, heat is your primary adversary. Temperatures frequently climb above 80°F (27°C). Because the 50M and 50K runners start at 6:30 AM, you'll get some cool morning miles, but the midday sun will hit hard during your second and third loops. Pack extra electrolytes and don't skimp on hydration.
What are the cutoff realities?
The organizers aren't playing around with the clock. For the 50K, you must finish your first loop by 12:00 PM. For the 50 Mile, you have to start your third loop by 2:15 PM and hit the Library Aid Station by 5:00 PM. If you aren't moving efficiently, the clock will catch you.
What do I need to know about race day support?
The logistics are solid. You get 5 aid stations per loop (6 hits if you're doing the 50K/50M because you pass South Beach twice). They provide water, electrolytes, and snacks. Post-race, they throw a BBQ which is a massive plus for morale. If you're doing the 50-miler, you are allowed a pacer for that final 16.5-mile loop plus the "baby loop," but they must be registered via Fingerlakesrunners ↗.
Is the registration fee worth it?
Actually, yes. The early bird pricing ($105 for the 50M/50K) is very competitive for an ultra. You get a t-shirt, breakfast, a post-race meal, and free camping at the Potomac Group Campground. Just note that prices jump every month (May and June), so don't procrastinate. Also, there are no deferrals—if you can't make it, you're only getting a 50% refund if you cancel before June 1.
Where should I crash?
The best move is to take advantage of the free camping at the race HQ starting Friday. It makes the 6:30 AM start much less painful. If you prefer a real bed, look for accommodations in the surrounding Finger Lakes region, but be prepared to drive; this isn't a "walk to the start line" kind of venue.
