What kind of terrain am I actually running?
Don't let the "Half Marathon" label fool you into thinking this is a casual jog. This is a technical trail course with significant elevation swings. You’ll descend sharply toward the No Hands Bridge and then face the inevitable, soul-crushing climb back up towards Cool. More than half the route sits on the Western States Trail, so expect roots, rocks, and real dirt. If you need to see the profile before you commit, check out the Auburn ↗ maps and GPX files.
Should I sign up for the Half, the 12K, or the 5K?
The Half Marathon is the crown jewel here, but it's a serious undertaking. The 12K is a great "middle ground" if you want to experience the No Hands Bridge descent without the massive climb back up. The 5K is a short, punchy loop to Robie Point—good for a warm-up, but it doesn't give you the full Western States experience.
- Half Marathon (Runners): 7:30 AM
- 12K: 7:45 AM
- 5K: 8:00 AM
Note:* There is also a 7:00 AM Hiker Division for those who want to tackle the distance at a walking pace.
What do I need to pack to survive the course?
This is a cupless race. Do not show up expecting a paper cup at every station; the organizers are pushing for sustainability, and it's a much more efficient way to run. You must carry a hydration pack or a handheld bottle. The aid stations are well-stocked with water, electrolytes, and fuel, but they are there to refill your gear, not hand you a drink in your hands. If you’re unprepared, you’re going to have a very bad time in the Auburn heat.
What is the weather like in late September?
September in the Sierra foothills can be a wildcard. Expect crisp, cool mornings at the start in Overlook Park, but be prepared for the sun to bake the trails by mid-morning. It’s rarely "humid," but the dry heat can sap your energy faster than you realize. Layering is key: light, breathable gear for the run, but a windbreaker for the pre-race chill.
How much is this going to cost me?
The pricing is fairly standard for a specialized trail event in California.
- 5K: $75.91
- 12K: $89.79
- Half Marathon: $105.80
Registration closes on September 27, 2026. If you are a "Remote Runner," you can save some cash by opting for the lower-tier pricing, but you won't be getting the full race-day atmosphere.
Are there strict time limits I should worry about?
Yes. If you are doing the Half Marathon, you need to be moving. You must reach Aid Station 4 (Mile 9.7) by 11:30 AM and Aid Station 5 (Mile 11.85) by 12:15 PM. If you miss these, you'll be diverted to a quicker route back to the finish. If you think you'll be slow, join the Hiker Division—you still get the medal and the official finisher status, just without the race awards.
