Which distances should I pick?
The Half Marathon is the flagship experience here. It starts directly at the Marina and has the most robust support system, including six aid stations and a lead biker to keep you on track. The 10K and 5K are great if you want a shorter burst of effort, but be aware they use different starting points. If you are looking for the most "organized" feel with the best pacing potential, go for the Half.
What is the route actually like?
Expect a relatively flat, road-based course that favors those looking for a steady rhythm. The Half Marathon starts at the Marina, while the shorter distances involve running toward the finish at the Marina from different points around the lake. It’s mostly urban roads and lakeside paths, meaning you won't be battling extreme technical terrain, but you will be dealing with standard road surfaces. You can view the specific layout on this Cloudfront ↗ map.
Will I be melting in the Iowa June heat?
June in Iowa can be a wildcard. You should prepare for humidity and temperatures that can climb quickly once the sun is up. While the race starts early (7:00 AM for the Half), the humidity off Storm Lake can make it feel much warmer than the thermometer suggests. Light, moisture-wicking gear is non-negotiable. The race goes on through rain, but lightning is the only thing that will stop the clock.
How much support can I expect on the course?
The organizers have scaled support based on distance, which is smart. Half marathoners get six aid stations with water and oranges, which is plenty for a road race of this scale. 10K runners get four stations, and 5K runners get two. It’s functional and sufficient, but don't expect high-end electrolyte mixes or specialized nutrition—stick to the basics.
What do I get for my registration fee?
For a community race, the perks are decent. You’ll get a race bib and a T-shirt, with the Half Marathon runners getting an upgrade to a long-sleeve shirt. The standout is the handmade medal, which gives it a more personal, local feel than the mass-produced plastic ones you see at larger urban marathons. You can check the registration details and pricing on Run Signup ↗.
Is getting to the start line going to be a headache?
If you aren't staying right next to the Marina, you need to plan your morning carefully. There is a single shuttle running at 7:20 AM from the Marina to the 5K and 10K start locations, but—and this is crucial—there is no return shuttle after the race. If you are doing the 5K or 10K, you’ll need to arrange your own way back to your vehicle or accommodation once you finish at the Marina.
