What distances and start times are available?

• →Half Marathon: Starts at 6:30 PM (5-hour cutoff; hiker-friendly option available)

What is the course profile and terrain like?

The race follows a historic rail trail corridor, which provides a very flat profile and a smooth, runnable surface of packed dirt and gravel. While the terrain is non-technical, the course is not considered a personal record (PR) course due to the challenges of extreme heat, sun exposure, and the complexities of night running.

How is the course laid out for each distance?

• →5K: An out-and-back route consisting of 1.55 miles out to a turnaround and back, including a bridge crossing in both directions.
• →Half Marathon: A route that goes 5.3 miles to the Downtown Farmville aid station, continues an additional 1.3 miles to the turnaround, and returns via the same route.
• →50K: A route traveling 5.3 miles to Downtown Farmville, 5.7 miles to the Tuggle aid station, 3 miles to the Prospect aid station, and 1 mile to the turnaround, before returning via the full route. Note that the actual distance is slightly longer at approximately 32 miles.

Crew members and runners can access the course at the following points:

What are the mandatory gear requirements?

• →Hydration: All runners must carry their own water (a minimum recommendation of 20 oz is advised).
• →Cupless format: This is a cupless race, so participants must bring their own cup.
• →Lighting: As the race transitions into the night, appropriate lighting for night running is essential.

What are the signature highlights of the race?

The event features a unique transition from sunset to night running. A signature moment occurs at the finish, where runners cross a bridge at night amidst moonlight and fireflies. The race also offers a strong community atmosphere with awards provided for all finishers.

Is there a way to earn special awards?

Yes, participants can participate in the High Bridge Challenge by combining the Night Train race with the Freight Train race held in December. Options range from a 26K combo up to a 150K combo. Completing both events earns a special award.
