This isn't a race for those hunting a world-class marathon PB; the loop-based format will mess with your head if you're a solo purist. However, if you want to celebrate the Fourth of July with a group, a tailgate setup, and zero elevation gain, this is a winner.
Liberty Station Relay 2026 takes place on Friday, July 4, 2026, in San Diego, United States. You can choose from a 5K, Half Marathon, or Marathon, with relay options available for the longer distances. It’s a high-energy, loop-centric event centered around the historic NTC Park.
What can I expect from the running route?
The course is 95% pavement and 5% light trail, making it incredibly predictable. It is a loop-based setup: 5 laps for the Half Marathon and 10 laps for the Marathon. This is a dream for relay teams because you can rotate legs easily, but be warned: if you are running the full marathon solo, the mental fatigue of seeing the same historic naval buildings every few kilometers is real. It is flat, fast, and perfect for pacing. Check out the routes on Strava ↗ and Strava ↗.
How should I prepare for the San Diego heat?
Since this is July 4th in Southern California, do not underestimate the sun. Even with the coastal breeze near the San Diego Bay, the temperature will climb quickly once the sun is up. Start early (the marathon kicks off at 06:30) and prioritize high-quality moisture-wicking gear and heavy electrolyte supplementation. The waterfront views are great, but they won't provide shade once you're mid-loop.
What are my distance and timing options?
